This text discusses the use of intellectual property (brands, collective marks, and geographical indications) as a strategy and their effects on tariffs and trade barriers. The paper uses a bibliographical survey of international trade to illustrate these relationships. The results of the discussion show that, among brands, collective marks, and geographical indications, the latter enjoy the greatest protection against tariff policies, especially when it comes to incremental tariffs. Geographical indications have a reputation for origin and certified quality; this is the only signal that can protect consumers against barriers. It can be concluded that one answer to reducing tariff conflicts, for Brazil and other countries as well, is to invest in and protect intellectual property and signs of quality such as GIs and certification marks.
2025-09-16T00:00:00+02:00 Copyright (c) 2025
